San Vicente de la Sonsierra

Hermitage of Saint John

The hermitage of San Juan is one of the first primitive Gothic constructions that exist in La Rioja. Due to its size, it must have been the chapel of the castle and the primitive parish until the 16th century, when the present one was built.

Its construction is attributed to Don Diego López de Ábalos, Warden of the castle and Governor of San Vicente in 1385, who was buried there, but the architectural characteristics of the temple refer to a previous context, perhaps, from the beginning of the 13th century

Since the middle of the seventeenth century it is the seat of the brotherhood of the Vera Cruz de los Disciplinantes.
